The rehabilitation service, in the main, provides physical therapy and occupational therapy. The service is staffed by three doctors, twenty six therapists (seventeen physical therapists, six occupational therapists and three speech-language-hearing therapists) and a nurse. We provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language-hearing therapy and hand therapy. There is a great deal of special rehabilitation equipment available for use in the training room on the first floor of the first ward building. We have, for example, the use of hot packs, a paraffin bath, microwave diathermy, ultra sound diathermy and lasers which are used for thermotherapy. Hydrotherapy (hydrothermotherapy, hydrokinetics and hydrogymnastics) is also available.
Our service is provided in two stages. The ‘acute rehabilitation stage’ which is immediately after the patient is admitted to the hospital for the injury, attack or operation. The doctor in charge will give the therapist the rehabilitation orders and therapy will be administered accordingly. At this stage, the therapist administers the therapy on an individual basis to the patient on his or her hospital bed. This stage is then followed by the ‘recovery phase rehabilitation’. This will not begin until the patient’s medical state becomes stable. The medical rehabilitation is then performed in the aforementioned training room where many facilities are available for use by the therapists. Our service is mainly for inpatients because of the limited number of therapists and the special role of our hospital.
Every Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 pm, there is a ‘Rehabilitation Case Conference’. All medical staff, orthotists and medical students are welcome to join the meeting to discuss each individual case in detail.
